TitleSmyth family of North Nibley; Cowper family of Lancashire
Date16th cent.-18th cent.
DescriptionA collection of nearly 2000 papers, documents and letters concerning the business and personal affairs of John Smyth, the elder of North Nibley who was steward of the hundred of Berkeley from 1597 until his death in 1641 and a close confidant of the Berkeley family. There are also some papers of later date concerning his son John and other members of his family. The particulars below indicate to some extent the nature of the papers. They were almost certainly part of the manuscripts preserved for many years at Condover hall, Shropshire, and eventually dispersed by auction in London. They were acquired (through the generosity of Mr Edwin Lea) from the executor of the late F A Crisp, FSA and arranged in volumes made for the purpose. A list of the contents is inserted in each volume and many of the more important papers are catalogued under the parishes to which they relate.
