TitleSouth West Centre of the Institute of Social Welfare
DescriptionMinutes and papers 1954-1989
Admin HistoryThe Institute of Social Welfare was established in 1953 to provide an inter-professional association for those engaged in Social Services in the United Kingdom. In later years, voluntary workers were also allowed to join
The papers relate to the South West Centre of the Institute, which was founded in 1954 to cover the counties of Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, and the county boroughs of Bristol, Bath and Gloucester. Other regional centres were established nationwide
In 1989 the South West Centre was dissolved due to declining membership. A major reason for the failure of the Institute to attract new members in later years was that it would not become involved in the Trade Union movement
